Committed and Determined
Committed and determined, Antonio “Kree” McCree founded AK Wrestling Foundation Inc. because he knew firsthand what it meant to grow up without guidance, direction, or a strong support system.
Abandoned by his parents and raised in foster care before being adopted, Kree spent much of his youth searching for identity and stability. He found both unexpectedly through a moment that many wrestlers know all too well:
The wrestling Coach Larry Brown, stopped him in the hallway and said,
“Hey, you look like a wrestler.”
That simple statement made him question everything: What does a wrestler even look like? Curious, he showed up to practice and from the very first day, he was hooked. Wrestling gave him structure. It gave him a team. And most importantly, it gave him a place to belong.
Not fully informed about his worth or college opportunities, Kree turned down a junior college offer in Illinois and chose to serve his country. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy, completed an honorable term of service, and came home with a new purpose:
To become a mentor and help guide youth into a brighter future.
Back in the wrestling room, Kree began coaching under the late, great Coach Henry Preston, served with local clubs, and contributed to national initiatives like Beat the Streets. But the fire inside him to do more to serve in his own way kept growing.
That fire became AK Wrestling Foundation Inc., a nonprofit built to provide underserved and foster youth with:
-
Free summer wrestling camps & after programing youth wrestling
-
Social-emotional learning (SEL) and mindset training
-
1-on-1 mentoring programs
-
Community service initiatives with local gardens and wellness spaces
-
The “Gear Up – Give Back” NIL campaign, which funds wrestlers’ journeys through purpose-driven merchandise
Kree’s goal is clear:
To offer the structure, brotherhood, and belief system that wrestling gave him, and to be the village he never had.
Through AK Wrestling Foundation Inc., Coach Kree is committed to fueling the fire that ignites the dreams of all wrestlers, helping them grow stronger not just on the mat, but in every corner of their lives.
